Ideas for a narrow and long bedroom
Starting with a well-defined plan is fundamental for furnishing a rectangular room, even more so if it is narrow and long. In order not to create visually annoying effects and to be able to manage all spaces in the best possible way, it is therefore advisable to assess every aspect in advance, such as the layout of the room and the position of windows and doors, in order to determine the optimal arrangement of the furniture.
Furnishing a narrow and long bedroom may in fact require more particular choices both in terms of furnishings and of accessories and decorations, but it can lead to decidedly unexpected results in terms of originality, perhaps, where necessary, letting yourself be advised by a professional to obtain a made-to-measure project that maximises the use of the available space.
If you are grappling with a furnishing project for a long, narrow bedroom, you may need special solutions to make proper use of every inch, without losing anything in terms of comfort and aesthetics. For this reason, before choosing the furniture it might be preferable to make an overall assessment of the room to determine its strengths and weaknesses.
With the room still empty, for example, it can be very useful to take into consideration aspects such as the presence of windows and balconies, the direction of light and the precise arrangement of the walls, and then go on to study those solutions that could make the available space stand out better. Replacing existing window frames with a sliding patio door can be a great way to reduce clutter – as can installing a sliding door at the entrance – while providing mirrors on the long side is the most practical solution to give the illusion of a larger space. To recover vertical space and create dynamism on one of the walls, not to be underestimated is the use of a shelf or several such elements on which to place books and other objects.
Colours and decorations also enhance the visual effect: paintings, stickers and wallpapers with geometric patterns, for example, can break the monotony of long walls, creating a visual rhythm and making the room more welcoming, while a different colour on the short wall, perhaps darker, can reduce the perception of the length of the room, creating a more intimate atmosphere.
Once you have studied the elements that allow you to recover centimetres both visually and practically, you can think about the furniture and accessories to be inserted in the room. The fact of having a reduced surface area and an unusual floor plan makes it necessary to study the various options available in greater depth: space-saving solutions are obviously a must in this sense, because they allow the room to be customised by managing every corner in the best possible way.
For example, it may be advisable to arrange the bed and other furniture along one side of the room, thus leaving more space in the centre for playing or, in any case, for moving around more freely, perhaps taking advantage of just one corner of the other wall or the space under the window to create a relaxation corner. A bridge bedroom set is, in these cases, the most effective solution to have both the bed and suspended wardrobes on one side, to which, if the length of the wall allows, another wall-mounted wardrobe or bedroom bookcases can be added to gain additional storage space.
How to furnish a narrow and long bedroom for two
But what if the children’s room has to accommodate two people? Furnishing a long, narrow bedroom for two is even more difficult: you have to fit two beds and more personal belongings, whether games, books or clothing to store in the wardrobes. As the space between one bed and the other may not be sufficient, it is generally recommended in such cases to resort to bunk beds or foldaway beds, which allow for less clutter by recovering the space vertically, and then build the other pieces of furniture around them, taking into account the minimum measurements available.
An alternative to bunk beds and rollaway beds, however, can also be the bedroom with loft beds, which allows you to create a more dynamic and multifunctional environment while also guaranteeing adequate privacy for guests. Just as very suggestive, but to be evaluated well in terms of measurements, is the idea of “dividing” the room into two separate areas using shelves or bookcases as separators, or placing both beds along the same wall but keeping them separate with cupboards or shelves.
In short, furnishing a long, narrow bedroom can be more difficult than a more “traditional” type of project, but with a little creativity and planning it will be possible to create an equally functional and cosy environment, characterised indeed also by a greater element of originality.
