Room colours: ideas and tips for choosing them correctly

Furnishing a child’s bedroom is a perfect opportunity to express creativity and imagination, creating a space that can represent for the little ones not only a place to rest, but also a stimulating environment for playing and developing their independence.

The colours chosen for the walls and furniture play a fundamental role in this respect in the room in which the little ones will spend most of their time going through the different stages of life. Choosing the right colours for children’s rooms is therefore not only a question of aesthetics, but also of comfort and visual stimulation, something to which attention must be paid in order to achieve a truly pleasant result.

Why pay attention to bedroom colours

The colour of the children’s room, as with other rooms in the home, can influence the mood and feeling of space. When designing a children’s room, the aim must in fact be to create an environment that is pleasant and welcoming, in which the little ones feel at ease and are stimulated to carry out their activities independently. One of the first steps can be to evaluate the different furniture solutions through our configurator, which allows you to customise the products and configure the different features according to your needs. To achieve a truly satisfactory result, however, it is important to consider other crucial aspects such as the choice of colours for the walls, linked both to personal taste and objective factors.

Apart from individual choices, which may lead to a preference for one colour over another, other possible issues such as light and space should not be underestimated. A small bedroom, for example, should not be made heavier by applying a colour that is too dark to the wall, as this may result in an even narrower perception of the available space. Similarly, if the room is not very bright, a light pastel colour will be the best solution to overcome the problem and ensure that the lack of natural light is compensated for by the chosen shade.

Room wall colour: how to choose it

We have previously analysed some of the fundamental aspects to be taken into account when choosing the colour of the nursery wall, but in reality a lot will depend on the personal idea and design.

One of the first steps is, for example, to decide whether to opt for bright, vivid colours or for so fter, more relaxing shades. Pastel colours are now a very popular choice for children’s rooms as they convey a feeling of softness and serenity, while ensuring a pleasant appearance in line with the tastes of the little ones at home. Tones such as pink, light blue and pastel green can create a relaxing and restful environment and, if enriched with special elements such as polka dots, clouds or coloured stickers on the walls, can also encourage an imaginative and fun approach to the room.

If, on the other hand, a more neutral approach is desired, colours such as white, beige or grey can be a choice not to be underestimated. Elegant and versatile, in fact, these colours easily adapt to any furnishing style and can be combined with brighter details such as coloured carpets or decorative accessories.

Boy or girl? Which colours for children's rooms

The choice of nursery colours often varies depending on whether the room accommodates a boy, a girl or both little ones. Although there are no colours for boys and girls, it is true that in the collective imagination there are shades that are considered more suitable for one gender than another.

For boys’ rooms, for example, people often opt for stronger colours such as blue or dark green, which can give a touch of energy and vitality to the room, while for girls the choice almost always falls on pink, lilac and the other shades of this palette. In the first case, however, it is important to balance more intense tones with lighter or neutral shades to avoid an over-stimulating environment, just as in a room with a predominance of pink it is advisable to break it up with some stronger colours, such as violet, to add intensity.

Beyond these more ‘traditional’ choices, the most recent furnishing trends are pushing for more neutral solutions, from beige to dove grey, passing through yellow and pastel green, which make it possible to create an environment that is both relaxing and elegant in which each child can feel inspired in a different way. Combining these colours with the warmth of the wood of a bookcase or wardrobe and decorative elements that can give an extra touch of fantasy to the whole room can be a really interesting choice, which allows you to obtain a result that never tires.

Personalising the nursery with the help of the little ones

A final aspect to consider is that of personalising the room on the basis of the preferences expressed by those who will live in it most, namely the children. In fact, our little ones love to feel involved in the choice of colours and furnishing of their room, and they always participate with great enthusiasm in the various phases of designing and realising their space. One of the pieces of advice we would like to give is therefore to actively involve them in the selection of their favourite colours for the wall and to leave them the possibility of adding a personal touch with posters, wall decorations or other elements that can make them feel even more like protagonists in their own area.

You will be surprised at how fast children’s imaginations can run wild and how, from an early age, the little ones are able to express complex and articulate preferences, a manifestation of a personality that is forming and will lead them to be careful and aware adults.
